Is MetaTrader 5 halal? What the platform decides and what it doesn't
MetaTrader 5 is software. It places orders, draws charts and reports your account state. It does not set your swap policy, choose your instruments or decide your leverage — which is why asking whether MT5 is halal is asking about the wrong layer. The useful version of the question is: what can I verify inside MT5 that tells me whether my account is compliant?
Read our methodology and editorial policy.
Short answer
MetaTrader 5 is a neutral tool, so using it is permissible in itself. What decides the ruling is the account behind it: whether swaps accrue, whether the instruments you trade are spot or contracts for difference, what leverage is set, and how costs are charged. MT5 is genuinely useful here, because it displays the swap on every position and the contract specification of every symbol — the evidence you need is inside the terminal.
Why the platform is not the ruling
No school of fiqh attaches a ruling to software. A platform is a means of contracting, in the same way a telephone order or a written contract note is. The contract it creates is what gets analysed: what is bought, from whom, on what settlement terms, with what charges.
That means the same MT5 installation can be running a permissible swap-free spot account and an impermissible financed CFD account side by side. The terminal is identical; the accounts are not.
What you can verify inside MT5
This is where MT5 earns its place in a compliance check. Right-click any symbol and open Specification: it shows the contract size, the swap rates for long and short, the swap calculation mode, and the margin requirement. If a symbol shows non-zero swap values, that instrument is not swap-free on your account — regardless of what the account is called.
The Trade and History tabs show a swap column per position. Hold one small position through rollover and the number appears there. That is first-hand evidence of your own account's behaviour, which is stronger than any marketing page.
- Symbol → Specification → Swap long / Swap short: zero means swap-free for that symbol
- Specification → Swap type: 'points' or 'interest' tells you how it is computed
- Trade tab → Swap column: what your open position has actually accrued
- History tab: the financing booked on closed trades
- Journal tab: what leverage the account is set to
Copy trading and Expert Advisors inside MT5
MT5 ships with signal subscription and supports Expert Advisors. Neither changes the analysis of the underlying trades, but both change who chose them. If you subscribe to a signal that trades financed CFDs, those are your contracts and your financing charges.
Practically, that means anyone using copy features or automation on a swap-free account needs to check which instruments the strategy touches — a strategy drifting into gold, indices or crypto may leave the swap-free scope. Our guides on copy trading and algorithmic trading cover the delegation question in full.
Platform availability, factually
Liquid Brokers documents MetaTrader 5 alongside Liquid Charts, Liquid Charts Pro and TH Social, across ECN, NOC, VIP and Copy account types. It does not offer MetaTrader 4 — if you see MT4 attributed to this broker anywhere, including on our own site historically, that is outdated.
Its published account table lists swap fees as enabled on all four account types, and the broker does not publish swap-free eligibility or instrument scope. So MT5 access does not tell you anything about swap treatment: request swap-free status from support and then verify it in the terminal using the checks above.
If you trade this through a broker
Liquid Brokers is our affiliate partner and the broker we document in most depth: a $10 documented minimum, MetaTrader 5, 300+ instruments. Swap-free status is not automatic — its own account table lists swap fees as enabled on all four standard accounts, so request the status in writing and verify a zero financing line before you fund.
Frequently asked questions
Is MetaTrader 5 halal?
The platform itself is a neutral tool, so using it is permissible. The ruling depends on the account behind it — swap policy, instrument type, leverage and cost structure. MT5 is useful precisely because it displays those facts per symbol and per position.
How do I check if my MT5 account is swap-free?
Right-click the symbol, open Specification, and read Swap long and Swap short. Zero on both means that symbol carries no financing on your account. Then hold a small position through rollover and confirm the swap column in the Trade tab still reads zero.
Is MT4 or MT5 better for an Islamic account?
Neither is more compliant; both are order-routing software. MT5 exposes swap and margin details more clearly per symbol, which makes verification easier. Liquid Brokers documents MT5 and does not offer MT4.
Are Expert Advisors and automated strategies halal on MT5?
Automation does not change the ruling of the trades it places. A program trading permissible swap-free spot instruments is permissible; one trading financed CFDs is not. You remain responsible for the contracts your program enters.
Does MT5 charge anything itself?
No. Costs — spread, commission and any swap — come from the broker, not the platform. The same MT5 build can run accounts with very different cost structures.
