Is forex trading halal in Pakistan?
Read our methodology and editorial policy.
Short answer
Forex trading is permissible for Pakistani Muslims under three conditions: the currency exchange settles immediately, the account pays and charges no overnight interest, and leverage is kept low enough that the position is a trade rather than a gamble. A standard account that debits or credits overnight swap is riba and is not halal, no matter how the profit is used. Separately from the fiqh, Pakistan has no locally licensed retail forex broker, so a Pakistani trader is dealing with an offshore firm and carries that counterparty risk himself.
Trading in Pakistan — the local picture
Pakistan is the largest halal-trading search market in the world: 'is forex trading halal' runs at roughly 1,600 searches a month there, against 720 in the United Kingdom and 210 in the United States, and 'forex halal or haram' adds another 320. The questions are asked in both English and Urdu, often in the same session.
There is no SECP-licensed retail forex or CFD broker in Pakistan. The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan regulates the Pakistan Stock Exchange and licensed securities brokers; margin forex sits outside that perimeter. In practice this means every Pakistani retail forex account is with an offshore firm, and Pakistani law will not help you recover funds from one.
The State Bank of Pakistan controls foreign-exchange outflows. Moving rupees abroad to fund a margin trading account is not a routine, unrestricted transfer, and the practical route most traders use — cards, e-wallets, or a local payment agent — carries its own conversion cost and its own risk that a deposit is reversed. Read the State Bank's current foreign-exchange rules before you move money, not after.
Because the regulatory floor is low, the Shariah question and the safety question have to be answered together. An account can be genuinely swap-free and still be with a firm you have no recourse against.
SECP (Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan) and the State Bank of Pakistan
No retail forex or CFD broker is licensed to serve Pakistani residents domestically. Pakistani traders use international brokers, which means local investor-protection rules do not apply to the account.

Shariah considerations Pakistani traders actually weigh
Pakistani traders generally weigh the rulings of the Council of Islamic Ideology, which advises the state on the conformity of laws with Islam, and the Federal Shariat Court, whose 2022 judgment on riba ordered the elimination of interest from the banking system by 2027. Neither institution has issued a retail-forex-specific ruling that settles the leverage debate, but both make the riba analysis unambiguous: an overnight financing charge is interest.
Deobandi and Barelvi scholars in Pakistan have issued numerous individual fatwas on forex, and they do not agree. The disagreement is rarely about swaps — everyone treats those as riba — it is about whether broker leverage is a loan and whether a CFD, which never transfers ownership, is a sale at all. A trader who wants the safest position trades spot instruments, uses the lowest leverage the account allows, and closes positions before rollover.
AAOIFI's standards, used across the Gulf and increasingly referenced in Pakistan, accept the spot convention for currency exchange. That is the basis on which most contemporary scholars permit spot forex at all.

Funding and currency in Pakistan
- There is no PKR base-currency account at the major offshore brokers; deposits are converted, and the conversion spread is a real cost before you place a trade.
- State Bank foreign-exchange rules govern what you may legitimately remit. Using an informal channel to get around a limit is a legal problem, not a Shariah workaround.
- We have not verified which funding methods Liquid Brokers offers Pakistani residents. The broker does not publish its funding-method list or processing times, so treat any figure you read elsewhere as unverified.
Broker eligibility for Pakistani residents
Pakistan is not currently listed among Liquid Brokers' published restricted territories (checked 2026-09-18). That is not the same as confirmed acceptance — the broker does not publish a positive list of accepted jurisdictions, so eligibility remains subject to its current application, KYC and jurisdiction requirements. Check the live application form before depositing.

Halal forex in Pakistan — FAQ
Is forex trading halal or haram in Pakistan?
It depends on the account, not the country. Spot currency trading with immediate settlement, zero overnight interest and modest leverage is permitted by a broad group of contemporary scholars. A standard account that charges or pays overnight swap involves riba and is not permissible. Pakistani scholars differ on leverage and on CFDs, which never transfer ownership.
Is forex trading legal in Pakistan?
There is no SECP-licensed retail forex broker in Pakistan, and the State Bank restricts foreign-exchange outflows. Pakistani traders use offshore brokers, which means no local investor protection applies and remittance rules still bind you. Check the current State Bank foreign-exchange regulations before funding an account.
Which broker is halal for Pakistani traders?
No broker is halal as a company — an account is either structured acceptably or it is not. Liquid Brokers, our affiliate partner, is the broker we document in most depth, and its own account table lists swap fees as enabled on all four standard account types. Swap-free status must be requested and confirmed in writing, and Pakistan's eligibility is not something we have verified.
Is gold (XAUUSD) trading halal in Pakistan?
Gold is a ribawi commodity, so classical fiqh requires immediate settlement on both sides of the exchange. Spot gold with same-day settlement and no financing charge has a reasonable case; a leveraged gold CFD held overnight with a financing line does not. Gold is one of the most traded instruments among Pakistani retail traders, and it is also the one most often left out of a swap-free waiver.
Do I pay Zakat on a forex trading account in Pakistan?
Yes. Cash in the account and realised profits enter your Zakat base at market value on your Zakat anniversary, at 2.5% on the lunar year. Open positions are normally valued at their market value on that date.
