Zakat calculator
Zakat on cash & bank balances
Cash that you have held for one lunar year (hawl) above the nisab is zakatable at 2.5%. This includes balances in current accounts, savings accounts, and physical cash.
Read our methodology and editorial policy.
The rule
Cash held for a full hawl (lunar year, ≈354 days) above the nisab threshold is zakatable at 2.5%.
Nisab is the lower of the gold (85g) or silver (595g) equivalent. The silver nisab is lower, which is the more cautious choice and generally recommended.
Interest accrued on the cash is not zakatable income; it must be donated separately to charity without expectation of reward, since it is not lawful for you to keep.
Calculate yours
Zakat due
$0
Your total is below the silver nisab equivalent (~$5,200 USD). No zakat is due unless this rises and stays above for a full lunar year.
Worked example
Holding $20,000 in savings and a $5,000 short-term debt
Expected zakat ≈ $375
Notes
- Only short-term debts due within the year are typically deducted. Long-term debts like a mortgage are not, unless the next year's instalment is imminent.
- If your total is below the silver nisab equivalent (~$5,200 USD in 2026), no zakat is due.
