Zakat on cryptocurrency

Most contemporary scholars treat held crypto as mal (property) and zakate it at 2.5% of market value at the hawl date, the same way they treat cash or gold.

The rule

Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other coins treated as property by your reference scholars are zakated at 2.5% of USD-equivalent market value at the hawl date.

Use the USD market price on the day you calculate zakat — the snapshot value matters, not the price at acquisition.

Coins held in long-term cold storage and coins held on an exchange are treated identically. Self-custody does not change the ruling.

Zakat = Total crypto market value (USD) × 2.5%

Calculate yours

Zakat due

$0

Worked example

Holdings of $30,000 BTC, $10,000 ETH, and $5,000 in other coins

Expected zakat ≈ $1,125

Notes

  • Yield from interest-bearing 'earn' products is not zakatable income — it must be removed from the account and donated separately as it is not lawfully yours.
  • Coins held in futures positions or as collateral for borrows are out of scope. Resolve those positions before calculating.
